Of the original 151 Pokemon only 142 are available. Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno, Mew, Mew Two and Ditto account for 6...what are the other 3 that are missing? We already know that the legendaries will be event only rewards.

They are in the game but not in your pokedex right now.
    The Dratini line.

Oh, I haven't caught any of that line yet so wouldn't know that they're not in pokedex hehe, thanks for the info. Sadly it may be a while before I get any...I am in a land locked desert...water pokemon are really rare here hehe. Can't wait until the trade system some in. Then I will be able to trade with some of the tourists to get water pokemon to fill my pokedex up.

Well I'm sure as the games goes on things will change and we will have different ways to acquire branched evolutions, because it can't always be random. I mean it could but that would be really really mean and horrible lol.

Umm... Dratini and co aren't water.
    They're dragons...
From what I've heard, they tend to appear near landmarks - but I don't know how true that is. I actually had one spawn (dragonite, a weak ass dragonite - better off evolving my Dratini all the way up instead) in a park within the city (Birmingham, the second city of England... Or that is what it's classified as...)

No Dratini and Dragonair aren't water types but they are based on water serpents. They show up at the big park most ppl go to here which is on the side of a big river.
